Fetch Theatre's Journey to Ukraine: Bringing Art and Healing to Young Lives

In April, Fetch Theatre is embarking on a transformative journey to Ukraine. We plan to work with young people from frontline territories to create a compelling story about the Ukrainian artist Polina Raiko, utilizing the enchanting medium of shadow puppetry. This endeavor not only aims to express creativity but also to tap into the healing powers of art during challenging times. With your support, we hope to make a meaningful impact on these young lives.

The Importance of Art in Healing

Art has long been recognised for its healing properties. Especialy war zones, the act of creation allows individuals to express emotions that are often difficult to articulate. In the case of Ukrainian young people facing the impacts of war, engaging in artistic practices can promote emotional well-being, resilience, and hope.

Statistics show that communities exposed to war often experience higher rates of anxiety and depression. Programs focusing on art therapy and creative expression are vital. According to a study by the National Endowment for the Arts, participating in the arts can boost mental health significantly. This evidence underscores the mission of Fetch Theatre and the importance of our upcoming project.

Fetch Theatre's Vision and Mission

Fetch Theatre is dedicated to empowering communities through the magic of storytelling. We believe in the power of collaboration where diverse voices come together to create something beautiful. Our vision aligns perfectly with the need for artistic outlets in difficult circumstances.

The upcoming project will be a week-long workshop with 12 young participants selected from different frontline territories in Ukraine. These workshops aim to inspire creativity and promote collective storytelling, culminating in a performance that showcases the rich heritage of Ukrainian art through the life of Polina Raiko.

In this workshop, participants will learn the art of shadow puppetry— a captivating form that combines craft and performance. By teaching them this unique technique, we provide them with an opportunity to tell their own stories, reclaiming their narratives through artistic expression.

The Journey to Ukraine: What to Expect

During our week in Ukraine, we will engage in various workshops designed to foster creativity and collaboration. Our team will introduce the concept of vis-à-vis shadow puppetry and how to design and produce puppets. We will focus on storytelling techniques that resonate with the personal and cultural experiences of the participants.

Over the course of the week, participants will work closely with our skilled artists to bring Polina Raiko’s story to life. This empowers young individuals to connect with their roots, embracing the artistic legacy of their homeland. The final performance will be a celebration of their journey, showcasing not just the talent of the participants but also the healing power of art.
