Who knew there was a city in Europe untouched by the hand of globalisation? Lviv is a remarkable city, with a fascinating history. It’s full of artisan coffee shops, and art galleries.

Residents of Lviv are justifiably proud of their beautiful city and of their cultural heritage. On exam days you’ll see how local school children dress up in their national costume for such ‘special’ days.

​

On this trip you get to experience both the remarkable city itself but also to take in some of the wonderful surrounding countryside as you take a day out to visit local castles and chateaux – including an ornate chateau once used by the Soviets as a sanatorium and untouched since the end of Soviet rule.

We advise on the best flights to travel to Ukraine, and arrange for you to be met at the airport.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1 
We meet you at the airport and personally transfer you to the hotel in central Lviv that will be your base for the week. There’s time to wander and explore before we walk together to one of the amazing restaurants Lviv has to offer for a superb Ukrainian welcome dinner. Over dinner we will introduce you to the ancient Ukrainian skill of toasting.

Day 2 
A chance to really find your way around this charming city. One of the local residents will take you on a walk around the city and point out some of its most interesting history, artists and artisan coffee shops. Then we’ll stop for a traditional Ukrainian lunch before climbing to the top of the Lviv town hall tower to experience the stunning and far reaching views of the city.

The rest of the afternoon is yours to while away as you wish. Spend some time exploring the interesting nooks and crannies you spotted on your morning discovery walk. That evening we meet again for a remarkable opera or ballet at the National Opera House. This will be followed by dinner at one of the many cultural restaurants in Lviv city centre.
 
Day 3 
You’re in for a real treat today as we visit the museum of vernacular architecture. Set in acres of beautiful countryside this is the most stunning collection of traditionally built wooden buildings – from simple cottages to ornate circular roofed churches. It really is like a step back in time and you will be able to imagine just how life was in centuries gone by.
After lunch there’s a visit to the national museum where you will be able to learn all about traditional textiles. And we will get to see one of the biggest private collections of historic Ukrainian clothing.

Day 4 
We leave the city of Lviv today and venture into the surrounding countryside for a tour of three completely different styles of castle. A local guide will be on hand to answer questions and explain the chequered history of these castles through the era of Soviet rule and beyond.

We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in wild flower meadows in the grounds of one of the castles before returning to Lviv for our evening meal at a traditional Armenian restaurant.

 

Day 5 
On your last day in this beautiful city there’s a chance to visit the Icon museum, which has the world’s biggest collection of sacral art ranging from the 12th century right up to today.

Then it’s time for a last lunch together, before we help you on your way to the airport for your journey home.
